What to Bring to Bocas Tip Sheet:
- Groceries: In Bocas del Toro, food is relatively expensive, and vegetable selection limited. We suggest you do some Veggie shopping before you arrive- especially if you are a vegetarian, staying for a while, or on a budget. As a backpacker, I recommend Casa Verde Hostel & Guesthouse because it has a really good kitchen and group pot-luck dinners. - Extra Sandals- It never fails, I always wrip a sandal in Bocas. There are only a few sandal selections for $2.50 each pair, and they aren’t particularly fashionable nor guaranteed to have a matching pair in your size!
- Organic bug repellent- GRUBBERS JUNLE OIL is a bit difficult to locate, you can find it at the Tuesday Market Meeting in Boquete. A $10 bottle of oil is the only 100% effective solution we know of to prevent the DREADED sand-fly bites known as ‘chitras’. Sand flies are worst at sunset and sunrise.
- Bottle Water- Dehydration in Bocas is a major source of headache & hangover alike. Another good thing about Casa Verde is the water filter. You’ll quickly learn that beer is cheaper than water. Even if you don’t stay at Casa Verde, it’s totally okay to stop by with your empty jug to fill up!
